FEROCITY - Republication (Brooligan Press)

Something is stalking the Northumberland moors, slaughtering sheep and other livestock. There have been sightings of a big cat, a huge, feral creature that has so far managed to elude capture. Some of the locals are terrified, while others scoff that it’s only a legend. Still, the killings continue.

Cath Lane is a young novelist and mother, eager to explore her new home in rural Northumberland. To her the legendary beast of the moors is excellent fodder for a new novel. How could she know as she begins her research that the beast is no mere myth?

How could she foresee the terror that waits for her, crouching in the dark…?

“Ferocity draws on horror’s history. I was particularly reminded of the style and worlds of Cornell Woolrich. Both Woolrich and Laws share engaging writing styles; incorporating the worlds of crime and horror. Stephen Laws’ prose generates suspense with exquisite simplicity” Horror Reader

“This is a wonderfully involving and truly frightening tale that brought to mind the ancient Grendel story that so thrilled me as a child. Mr Laws is a masterful writer of great intensity and immediacy, drawing the reader into the narrative from the opening scene to the last. Beautifully conceived and beautifully wrought, this is scare fare of the highest order—perfect for a cold winter’s night” Creature Corner

“Stephen Laws breaks the traditional horror mould with his new novel Ferocity. Flawlessly blending the rich atmosphere of a finely crafted horror story with the action packed ride of a well thought out thriller, Ferocity is a novel that grabs a hold of your every last nerve until well after the final page is read. A novel that takes off like a shot and does not let up until the final pages. Laws’ writing is tight and rich with atmosphere making this a pleasurable reading experience as your nerves go into overdrive. His prose switches effortlessly from the quiet horror sequences to the all out action giving the reader a smooth ride through the nerve-wracking story. With the fusion of horror and suspense, this novel is sure to satisfy any lover of a great thriller as well as the most discerning horror fan. I highly recommend getting your hands on Ferocity by Stephen Laws to experience a fresh outlook on the classic horror novel” Joe Kroeger

Darkfall: New edition

A STORM IS COMING

Christmas. And an entire office block of revellers has disappeared into thin air.

A STORM IS COMING

DI Jack Cardiff and his investigating squad are about to discover the Hell that is ‘Darkfall’; where bricks, plaster and stone have a life of their own, where the inexplicable and the insane become horrifyingly real.

A STORM IS COMING

And for those trapped in the block and cut off by the violent weather, a terror beyond imagination is about to descend from the howling tempest.

“A slam-bang paranormal thriller, Laws is one of the most inventive writers on the scene” The Times

“Makes the reader distinctly uneasy about touching any walls or doors when the thunder rumbles” Penthouse

“One of Britain’s masters of terror” Vector

“A powerhouse of a book that hooks you immediately and never lets go. Exciting, relentless, gory and hugely entertaining” Million Magazine

“Truly barnstorming supernatural horror from a writer of tremendous pace and energy. A veritable roller-coaster ride” Northern Echo

“A brilliant horror novel. An imaginatively potent brew of visual and visceral terror” Starburst

“Stephen Laws, the real thing. For me he's the classic horror writer. His work operates as a salutary reminder to the rest of us, rooted as it is in the traditions of the genre: back to basics in the truest sense, it draws its strengths from his deep knowledge of the forerunners who first broke this ground, while remaining totally contemporary and always surging forward. Neat trick if you can do it; and Laws is one of the few who can” Dark Asylum

“Laws’ work typifies a new generation of horror writing: (It) inhabits the world as we know it, and is all the scarier for it” Maxim

“This book follows in a line of compelling sickeners. Not for Laws the small and nagging horrors of the individual mind; his scary monsters come with global aspirations and implications. A rattling yarn” The Journal

The Frighteners: 25th Anniversary Edition

I’m delighted to announce the republication of my novel THE FRIGHTENERS, in a special 25th Anniversary edition courtesy of Pete Kahle of Bloodshot Books. Pete has gone the extra mile and it looks splendid, containing a chapter that was excised from the original publication and appears here for the first time, as intended (Part 2, Chapter 21 page 143). With splendid cover art by Dean Samed, the book also includes interior artwork for each section of the book by my brother, Ray Laws.

And now I can let everyone have an inside story about the book. When writing it, I asked my close friend Stephen Gallagher (novelist, screenwriter, director) if I could include him as a fictional character, and also let him create the means by which he should die (in the novel, of course). So – the hit man ‘Gallagher’ was born (and a representation of that character is on the front cover). However, when Steve sent me a description of how he wanted to die – it was so outrageous that I couldn’t use it. My own means of ‘Gallagher’s’ demise is something I’ll leave new readers to discover for themselves, but if anyone is wondering what Steve’s method of personal disposal was – then check out his story entitled ‘Hunter, Killer’ in the collection NIGHT VISIONS 8 (which also contains stories by John Farris and Joe Lansdale, with an introduction by Robert R. McCammon). It’s all there.

Many thanks to the kind words I’ve had from those who are familiar with the novel – I hope you enjoy the additional material. I hope that new readers get a kick out of it, too. Finally, just to add that I had the great pleasure of meeting the actor Andre Morell’s son, Jason – and was able not only to say how much I loved his father’s work, but to tell him that the character of ‘Sir James Callender’ in THE FRIGHTENERS is very much based on Andre’s ‘persona’. I hope you picture him in your head when you’re reading!

THE MIDNIGHT MAN (The Short Stories of Stephen Laws)

I'm delighted to announce that so soon after the ebook publication of SOMEWHERE SOUTH OF MIDNIGHT and CHASM, Samhain have just published my revised and updated short story collection THE MIDNIGHT MAN (also available as a large format paperback). The collection was previously issued by Silver Salamander Press under the kind auspices of John Pelan - but this updated release contains stories written since that original publication. There are also notes on the writing of each story, and stealing some inspiration from Harlan Ellison - whose original OUTER LIMITS television screenplays were published alongside the original stories way back when - I've also included the screenplay for my short horror movie THE SECRET (together with the story) including notes on the location filming. So it's possible to compare the story to the screenplay - and even the short movie itself (which is currently available briefly on Youtube, together with a couple of trailers). I'm also very pleased to report that it won the Macabre award in New York for best short horror film.

"Stephen Laws is the authentic article - a writer whose love of good horror is as profound as his skill with it. He's one of the true contemporary treasures of the field. Supernatural horror would be a lot poorer without him." - Ramsey Campbell

"Stephen Laws has always had the gift of making his readers believe the unbelievable ... even when they would really rather not. His horrors rise from the page like a corpse rising from a rain-soaked grave and touching you with a cold, muddy hand." - Graham Masterton

"Stephen Laws is the real thing. For me he's the classic horror writer." - Dark Asylum

Chasm

Hot on the heels of the SOMEWHERE SOUTH OF MIDNIGHT ebook, I'm very pleased to say that CHASM is now also available as an ebook from Samhain Publishing with another new, great cover.

Not only does the ebook contain a chapter previously not included in the original hardback and paperback editions (involving an encounter between Gordon the guitar player and the ferocious Cherubim), but it also has a reinstated Prologue. This has been a great opportunity to restore material which remains very close to my heart, and my renewed thanks go out to editor Don D'Auria and his team at Samhain.

Stay tuned for a further announcement soon on the ebook release of my short story collection THE MIDNIGHT MAN, with additional stories and material (again, from Samhain).
